RECEPTION FOR THE ARTIST
Thursday, October 2, 6-8pm

For his Factory Made series, Brooklyn-based multimedia artist Michael Hambouz hand-cuts paper stock from independently-owned, family-run French Paper Company to create vibrant, abstracted scenes of the very factory where the paper is produced. The exhibition includes 18 new large-scale works by the artist, providing a glimpse into the operations of the 140-year-old American paper mill by showcasing the production process and machinery—from pulp to the final paper product—in a striking collage format.

The subject matter is of particular resonance to Hambouz, who grew up within a mile of the factory and began investigating it as a means of reconnecting with hometown of Niles, Michigan following the death of his mother in 2012. Emotionally and creatively drained, Hambouz found artistic inspiration in the factory and its paper—providing a departure from his previous works in acrylic paint. The resulting works celebrate small manufacturing, a geographical sense of home, and the simple, elegant beauty of cut paper collage.

Hambouz has exhibited work at Brooklyn Academy of Music, Pratt Institute, Fountain Art Fair, and numerous other New York City venues, and donates a portion of all sales to arts-related non-profit organizations. He received his bachelor of fine art’s degree in painting and sculpture from Antioch College.
